How to polish the car

The secret to a flawless glow.
Although a detailed exterior wash can leave your car looking great, there is one step that makes a real difference in the final finish: polishing.
This technique goes far beyond simple shine: it is a correction process that eliminates optical defects in the paint such as swirls, micro-scratches, holograms, water spots, or sun damage, restoring the bodywork to its original depth, uniformity, and shine.
Many believe that polishing is only necessary for old or very worn vehicles, but the reality is that even new cars show imperfections caused by poor washing, transportation, or storage.
In this guide, we will show you step by step how to polish your car like a professional without prior experience, what products to use, what mistakes to avoid, and how to achieve that mirror finish you desire.
PREPARATION OF THE BODYWORK
Degrease your car before polishing it.
DEGREASE BODY:
Before carrying out any polishing process, it is essential to remove all types of residues adhered to the surface such as dirt, grease, and waxes that may interfere with the final result.
To eliminate all these residues, we recommend using Body Degreaser, our degreaser for bodywork, which can be applied with a foam lance, with the FCX electric foamer, and with a bucket and mitt using the two-bucket method.

Eliminate invisible pollutants from the paint.
DECONTAMINATE BODY:
Although at first glance the paint may seem clean after degreasing, the surface can still retain contaminants that are not removed with a simple wash: metallic particles, resin residues, tar, industrial pollution, or even brake dust that gets embedded in the pores of the varnish. If these residues are not removed, they can interfere with the polishing process, cause marks, and ruin all the work. That’s why it is essential to carry out a chemical and mechanical decontamination according to the condition of the vehicle.
First, we perform the chemical decontamination using Iron Cleaner to remove the metallic particles that are adhered to the surface. We spray it on the bodywork, let it act for 1 minute, and rinse with plenty of pressurized water.
Next, we carry out the mechanical decontamination using the Claybar, always lubricated with Clay Lube to avoid damaging the surface. We rub evenly in straight lines without pressing too hard and dry with a microfiber cloth. Little by little, you will notice that the surface feels smoother to the touch.

Key step: isolate delicate areas.
BODY PREPARATION:
Now is the time to protect and tape all the sensitive areas of the car that we don't want to damage with polishing, such as rubber and trims, plastic areas, joints, emblems, etc., as they could get marked, discolored, or absorb residues from the polish, especially porous plastics or untreated rubber.

1.- CHOICE OF POLISHING TYPE
(1, 2 OR 3 STEPS) AND PADS:
Not all vehicles require the same level of correction, so it is essential to adapt the polishing phases based on the actual condition of the paint evaluated beforehand. To achieve an excellent result, it is indispensable to use the Orbital Polisher from FullCarX, as unlike a rotary polisher, the orbital performs an oscillating movement in addition to rotation, which reduces the risk of burning the paint or leaving holograms, and is also much safer to work on curves or edges.
- Polishing in 1, 2, or 3 steps?
Step 1: Ideal for new vehicles or those with few defects. The goal is to achieve a general improvement in shine and the removal of light swirls, without seeking deep correction.
- Single step: Finishing Polish + Black Pad.
2 Steps: For cars with moderate defects such as visible swirls, micro-scratches, or lack of shine but without deep damage.
- Step 1: Medium Cut Polish + Yellow Pad
- Step 2: Finishing Polish + Black Pad
Step 3: Recommended when the paint shows many defects, such as marked swirls, superficial scratches, holograms, or dull varnish.
- Step 1: High Cut Polish + Red Pad (High Cut) or Green Pad (Extreme Cut for very deteriorated bodies).
- Step 2: Medium Cut Polish + Yellow Pad.
- Step 3: Finishing Polish + Black Pad.

2.- POLISHING PROCESS
To polish a car in perfect condition, we should always use clean and uncontaminated pads. If the pad is new, apply a small amount of polish to the pad and spread it manually over the entire surface before starting, to ensure an even distribution from the very beginning.
During polishing, we should apply 3 or 4 drops the size of a pea each time we are going to polish a different area. It is very important to polish by sections to work comfortably. During the polishing process, we will make at least 4 passes over each area and in each of the steps, performing these movements: First from right to left, then from top to bottom, next from left to right, and finally from bottom to top. 0
During the process, we must carefully control the amount and frequency of the product. An excess can saturate the pad and leave residues; and if we apply too little, the polishing will be inefficient or could even create marks due to dry friction.
One of the important aspects of using our polisher is the ability to modify the speed of rotation with a 6-speed control. Although there is no fixed rule for setting the speed, we do suggest the following recommendations:
- Always use Speed 1 to spread the polish over the area.
- Use speed 2-3 for high-cut polishing.
- Use speed 3-4 for medium-cut polishing.
- Use speed 4-5 for finishing polish.
- Only use speed 6 if you are a professional, as it can significantly increase the temperature of the bodywork.
One of the most important aspects of the entire process is the need to clean the polishing residues between each step, especially to have better control and visibility of the result we are achieving. For this, we apply IPA (isopropyl alcohol) with a microfiber cloth (we recommend the DUO POLISH).

3.- APPLY PROTECTION (Wax, sealant, or coating)
After all the correction and refinement work on the paint, one of the most important steps arrives: protecting the result. Applying good protection not only enhances the shine but also prolongs the life of the polish, helps keep the car cleaner, and makes long-term maintenance easier.
- BRIGHT VISUAL RESULT
On one hand, if you are looking for a very bright visual result with enhanced color and a very smooth touch, you can apply any of the protective waxes from FullCarX depending on the finish you are looking for. If you want to achieve shine quickly, the Quick Detailer or the Liquid Carnauba Wax will be the products you need. For greater protection and if you are looking for a more durable and powerful finish, you can apply the Solid Carnauba Wax or the Crystal Wax, a wax with high hydrophobic power.
Another highly recommended option is to apply a ceramic treatment, the most durable and effective protection after polishing. Although it takes more time, the ceramic treatment is easy to apply and has exceptional characteristics.
Our ceramic treatment NanoCarX 9H generates a layer over the paint that protects against UV rays, superficial scratches, droppings, dirt, etc., leaving a very shiny finish with high hydrophobic power. In addition, we also have 9H Glass, a specific treatment for glass with a high water and dust repellency.
